Orange County’s MenAlive, a local choral group, is marking its 25th anniversary season, celebrating a journey that began with 13 men in September 2001. The group’s inception followed a promise made by Rich Cook, who committed to starting the chorus if at least 12 individuals showed interest. From that initial rehearsal, MenAlive has grown significantly, now encompassing more than 100 singers and volunteers.
Throughout its history, MenAlive has aimed to provide voice, visibility, and a sense of belonging for LGBTQIA+ individuals across Orange County. The organization describes itself as a lifeline, creating a safe space for its members. Through its musical endeavors, MenAlive has offered connection, healing, and hope, with many members and audience members reportedly finding a sense of belonging. Executive Director Valerie Ousley stated, "Over the years, we’ve seen firsthand how music can change lives." She added that the chorus has been a place where people find their voice, find themselves, and find a community that supports them.
The chorus’s impact has extended to celebrated stages, performing alongside artists such as Leslie Jordan, Bernadette Peters, and Liza Minnelli. MenAlive has also appeared in notable venues, including Walt Disney Concert Hall, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, and the Hollywood Bowl. These performances are noted as reflecting artistic achievement and providing visibility for queer voices.
For its 25th-anniversary season, MenAlive has outlined a landmark concert calendar for 2026. The celebrations will commence this May with its anniversary showcase, MenAlive25: Finding Our Voice, scheduled at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Later in the year, the chorus is set to perform at the Hollywood Bowl for the sixth time in September, opening for The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA. Additional performances include Battle for Broadway in October and the holiday concert, Celebrate! From Our Hearth to Yours, in December. Music Director Gavin Thrasher remarked on the group's continued expansion, stating that they are "expanding our reach and welcoming new members, ensembles, and volunteers into the family." He expressed enthusiasm for creating meaningful performance experiences and building connections through music as the group continues its growth.
A significant step in this growth involves the launch of PrideAlive in August. This initiative will establish Orange County’s first mixed-voice queer chorus, operating under the newly formed VoicesAlive umbrella. Executive Director Valerie Ousley reflected on the mission's personal impact, sharing her experience of seeing her own son perform as a member. She noted that such moments make it clear that the work is more than music, viewing it as a legacy that creates a space where the next generation feels they belong. What began as a gathering of 13 voices is now characterized as a community, a haven, and a movement, striving to ensure everyone has a place to belong.
