Disneyland, a significant Orange County attraction, faced unexpected challenges Friday night when a sudden and intense downpour turned parts of the theme park into a water-logged landscape. An approximate 15-minute cloudburst over Anaheim rapidly overwhelmed sections of the resort, leading to widespread flooding of walkways and popular areas, and disrupting planned outdoor activities.
Despite a National Weather Service forecast anticipating regional rainfall totals of around 25 millimeters across Southern California for Friday, the sudden and localized deluge caught many parkgoers off guard. Storm drains within the park struggled to manage the rapid influx of water, resulting in water spilling across pedestrian paths and leaving visitors to navigate the unexpected conditions.
Footage circulated online depicted ankle-deep floodwaters in front of Frontierland’s Pioneer Mercantile and Shooting Exposition. Visitors in these areas were observed picking their way along garden edges and climbing onto benches to avoid the rising water, with one park visitor commenting that "The Rivers of America just expanded into Frontierland." Beyond Frontierland, pools of standing water were also reported in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and around the Haunted Mansion, transforming the planned park outing for some guests into a soggy experience.
The flooding extended into Fantasyland, where stormwater accumulated between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn Bobsleds, effectively turning pedestrian lanes into flowing streams. The weight of the water also caused protective shade canopies positioned above outdoor dining areas to overflow, directing cascades of water onto guest seating below.
In response to the escalating water issues, Disneyland Cast Members sprang into action. Equipped with brooms and squeegees, they worked to clear clogged drains and remove debris, actively addressing the threat of water spreading further across the park grounds.
The disruption was not confined solely to the theme park's interior. Standing water pooled across the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking tram terminals, extending the complications to the resort’s primary transport hubs. This made late-night departures more challenging, particularly for families navigating with strollers.
Disneyland management temporarily suspended outdoor rides throughout the park after lightning was detected over Orange County. Further impacting the evening's entertainment, the planned fireworks display was also cancelled, citing high winds, the wet weather, and identified lightning risks. Operations teams continued to work late into the night, focusing on clearing debris and pumping away standing water with the goal of preparing the resort for the anticipated weekend crowds.
