A 14,400-square-foot estate in Laguna Beach recently sold for $82.5 million, marking the second highest residential sale in Orange County history. The property, located on an acre of beachfront land at 100 Rockledge Road, previously belonged to David Wilson, founder and CEO of Wilson Automotive Group. Meital Taub and Jill Lockhart of Livel Real Estate in Laguna Beach, who represented Wilson, stated that this was the highest-priced residential sale in a non-gated community in Orange County, citing First American Title.
The estate was initially listed for $112 million in July. Property records indicate the sale closed in 82 days, approximately $29 million less than the original asking price, reflecting a 26% reduction. Joshua and Heather Altman from Douglas Elliman of California represented the buyer, while Taub and Lockhart represented Wilson. The agents declined to disclose the private buyer's identity or discuss negotiations.
Designed by architect Fred Briggs in the 1970s, the estate is situated on more than an acre of oceanfront land between Victoria Beach and Moss Point. Taub and Lockhart described the property as a "private resort." Built from Honduran mahogany, certain sections of the home extend over the Pacific Ocean, a feature now rare due to current permitting regulations. The residence includes a swimming pool, tennis court, movie theater, wellness center, an eight-car garage, and direct beach access.
Among its notable features is a primary bedroom with a retractable ceiling situated above a rotating bed. This room is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Wilson recounted to the Business Journal that he and his wife would use this feature to stargaze and observe meteor showers, describing it as "an unbelievable experience" that felt "like being on a boat."
David Wilson founded Orange-based Wilson Automotive in 1983. The company, which owns 18 dealerships across three states and Mexico, is projected to achieve $4.2 billion in sales this year and ranked No. 8 on the Business Journal's June list of the largest privately-owned companies based in Orange County. Wilson acquired the Laguna Beach property in 2001 for approximately $16 million and invested over $20 million in renovations and expansions before moving in, as he told the Business Journal. He explained to the Business Journal that he and his wife relocated to Henderson, Nevada, during the pandemic, and with their adult children preferring to live elsewhere, the family no longer used the Laguna Beach property enough to warrant keeping it.
While the buyer's identity and negotiations were not disclosed, Taub and Lockhart noted that the property garnered substantial interest, with multiple showings shortly after it entered the market. The agents attributed the swift sale to a coordinated marketing campaign, national media coverage, and their connections with high net worth buyers and their representatives. Taub emphasized that selling such a property required more than just listing it and taking photos, calling it a thoughtful and calculated approach. Taub noted that "only a handful of buyers" could realistically purchase a property of such magnitude.
The sale follows a $110 million deal for a custom-built, multi-story estate of 10,000 square feet in Emerald Bay, located about four miles north of Wilson’s former home. Lockhart indicated that the $82 million sale of Wilson’s coastal property demonstrates Orange County's appeal to very wealthy buyers willing to invest significantly in rare coastal properties. Taub told the Business Journal that the sale "clearly demonstrates that the ceiling for exceptional properties" in Orange County has moved significantly higher. Wilson expressed that departing from the family home was bittersweet, but agents confirmed he was pleased with the sale. Lockhart remarked that for Wilson and his family, "It’s something very dear to their hearts."
