John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana experienced an unusual disruption on Tuesday, October 6, when a Delta Air Lines passenger allegedly stole an airport vehicle and crashed it on the airfield, prompting a brief pause in flights.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department identified the passenger as 26-year-old Skyler Jay Barr, from Everett, Washington. Barr, who was scheduled for a flight to Seattle, reportedly left the terminal through a restricted door at Gate 12 around 5:30 p.m.

Once on the airfield, Barr allegedly stole an airport tug assigned to Alaska Airlines. He then drove the vehicle toward Gate 7, where it reportedly crashed into another vehicle. Airport Police Services intervened as Barr attempted to take an American Airlines lavatory truck. Police subsequently took him into custody, and he was later taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The incident led to flights being temporarily paused, and the area around Gate 7 was closed for approximately 10 minutes during the police response. Before normal aircraft movement could resume, crews inspected the taxiway between Gates 7 and 12 for any debris left behind from the incident.

PILOTS NOTICED ACTIVITY

Pilots waiting nearby observed the increased police activity and sought clarification from air traffic control. In recorded conversations, a controller informed them of a security breach involving a stolen tug, stating that a "ground stop" was in effect. While ABC7 later clarified that no official ground stop was issued, flights did briefly pause.

Delta Air Lines confirmed it was cooperating with law enforcement, stating it has "zero tolerance for unlawful behavior" and that nothing is more important than the safety and security of its customers and personnel. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also warns that unauthorized entry onto an airfield can be dangerous due to pilots' limited visibility of ground vehicles and pedestrians.

On Thursday, Barr was charged with felony vehicle theft and vandalism, in addition to misdemeanor trespass at an airport security inspection.

QUESTIONS REMAIN

The incident has raised questions among the public, with commenters on YouTube expressing frustration over airport security protocols and calling for more stringent consequences for such actions. As of yet, there is no confirmed explanation for why Barr took the tug or how he was able to access a restricted doorway so easily.
