A Stanton resident, Glen R. Sprowl Jr., has been posthumously recognized with the Carnegie Medal for heroism, following his fatal efforts to intervene in the mass shooting at Cook’s Corner in Trabuco Canyon in 2023. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission recently announced Mr. Sprowl, 53, as one of 16 recipients from the United States and Canada in its latest round of awards. The commission identifies the Carnegie Medal as the highest honor bestowed for civilian heroism across both nations.
Mr. Sprowl was killed on August 23, 2023, during an incident that began when a 59-year-old gunman initiated gunfire inside the crowded bar. According to the commission, the assailant first shot and wounded his estranged wife, and subsequently targeted several other patrons within the establishment.
The gunman continued his assault as he moved outside the bar. He proceeded to the parking lot, where he retrieved a shotgun from his truck. Mr. Sprowl, who worked as a shop manager and had been seated outside the front of the bar, entered the establishment shortly after the gunman had exited, as reported by the commission. He then returned outside and moved around the side of the building, making his way toward the parking lot.
Witnesses present during the event reported that Mr. Sprowl encountered several individuals and attempted to rally them to pursue the gunman. Armed with only a pocketknife, Mr. Sprowl continued his approach toward the assailant. His courageous pursuit led him to the base of a ramp that connected to the parking lot where the gunman was located.
At this location, the gunman discharged his shotgun at Mr. Sprowl. According to the commission, Mr. Sprowl was struck four times in the upper body. He collapsed and tragically died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Following the fatal shooting of Mr. Sprowl, the gunman went on to shoot two additional individuals. Orange County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene approximately four minutes later. The deputies exchanged gunfire with the assailant, ultimately fatally wounding him. In total, nine people were shot by the gunman during the incident, with three succumbing to their injuries, including Mr. Sprowl.
The Carnegie Medal is specifically awarded to individuals who face extreme danger in their efforts to save or attempt to save the lives of others, as defined by the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. This prestigious recognition highlights extraordinary civilian courage in the face of peril.
Since its establishment in 1904 by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the commission has honored 10,597 individuals with the medal. Recipients of the Carnegie Medal, or their surviving family members, also receive a financial grant in recognition of their heroic acts and the sacrifices made.
