The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is set to host a public education event this month aimed at raising awareness about alcohol consumption and safe driving practices. On August 16, 2026, the department will bring its “Know Your Limit” campaign to the Dana Point Concert in the Park, specifically at Sea Terrace Park. The program will run from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, offering patrons information on the importance of monitoring their alcohol intake.
The “Know Your Limit” program is designed as an interactive initiative to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving. Deputies will engage with concert attendees by asking them about the number of drinks they have consumed and whether they believe they are still capable of driving safely. Volunteers will then be invited to take a breathalyzer test, allowing them to compare their perceived sobriety with their actual blood alcohol content (BAC). Information regarding alcohol intake and average BAC levels will be provided to participants, reinforcing that it is illegal for anyone 21 or older to operate a vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher.
Understanding what constitutes the legal limit can be crucial for making responsible decisions. According to the California Driver Handbook, reaching a blood alcohol content of .08% or higher can happen with just a few drinks. For instance, a woman weighing between 120 and 160 pounds may exceed the legal limit after consuming two drinks within one hour. Similarly, a man weighing between 180 and 220 pounds could be over the .08% limit after three drinks within the same timeframe. The handbook defines “one drink” as 1.5 ounces of liquor (40% alcohol), 12 ounces of beer (4.5% alcohol), or a 5-ounce glass of wine (12% alcohol). It also notes that BAC levels decrease at an approximate rate of .01% for every 40 minutes between drinks.
Sergeant Kyle Ishii stated that “The goal is to help people understand the effects of alcohol so they can make smart decisions about how they get home.” He emphasized the swift onset of impairment, adding, “It only takes a few drinks to impair, and that’s why it is important that people know their limit.” The department aims to empower individuals with knowledge to plan for safe transportation.
The financial ramifications of a first-time DUI offense are significant, with an average cost estimated at approximately $13,500. This sum covers various penalties and fees, including vehicle impound charges, court fines, attorney fees, and increases in auto insurance premiums. To avoid these substantial risks and ensure public safety, authorities advise individuals to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before consuming alcohol. Funding for the “Know Your Limit” program is made possible through a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, which is administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
