Orange County high school football teams officially commenced their 2023 season with Week Zero openers across the region, providing local fans with an initial look at the competitive landscape. Out of five local squads participating in these early clashes, three successfully secured victories, marking a positive start for many area programs.

Among the most impressive performances of the week was that of the Huntington Beach Oilers, who achieved a commanding 42-14 victory over Millikan High of Long Beach in a Thursday night showdown. The Oilers' offensive attack was spearheaded by quarterback Brady Edmunds, whose exceptional play further solidified his reputation among the nation's top high school quarterbacks. Edmunds delivered a remarkable performance, completing six touchdown passes and accumulating an outstanding total of 434 passing yards. This offensive firepower was complemented by a robust defensive effort from Huntington Beach. The Oilers’ defense effectively stifled Millikan’s Rams, restricting them to a mere 113 yards of total offense for the entire game. Additionally, the defense played a crucial role in disrupting Millikan’s rhythm by forcing three turnovers, which undoubtedly contributed to the significant 28-point margin of victory for Huntington Beach.

Another Orange County team that began its season with a win was Pacifica. The Mariners' success was significantly fueled by quarterback Joseph Pham-Ngoy, who delivered an outstanding night on the field. Pham-Ngoy, notably having played as a tight end in the previous year, showcased his versatility and effectiveness in his new quarterback role. He personally ran for two scores, demonstrating his ability to contribute directly to the scoreboard and lead the offense. These efforts culminated in a strong 27-7 triumph for the Pacifica Mariners against Beckman, providing a strong start to their campaign.

While these two teams celebrated decisive wins, the broader picture for Orange County teams in Week Zero included a mix of outcomes. In other contests held during the opening week, Santiago emerged victorious with a 23-12 score against Saddleback. However, not all local teams experienced immediate success. Los Amigos faced a challenging contest, ultimately falling 20-14 to St. Bernard. Similarly, Magnolia encountered a significant defeat, losing 47-7 to University High of Orlando, Florida. Despite these varied results, the overall local high school football scene has officially begun, promising an engaging season ahead for players and supporters.
