The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) has announced a new initiative inviting students across Orange County to engage with local issues and develop community solutions using Minecraft Education. The program, known as Schools Reinventing Counties, is open to students in grades three through 12.
Through this initiative, elementary, middle, and high school students will enter a specially designed Minecraft Education world to explore challenges facing Orange County communities. Participants will consider various perspectives and examine how local decisions impact residents. The OCDE notes that this experience can be integrated into diverse educational settings, including classroom instruction, civic learning, STEAM programs, career and technical education, after-school activities, and esports.
Students wishing to expand their involvement can participate in Battle of the Counties, an optional competition. Teams in this challenge will be tasked with developing an innovative, evidence-based solution to an issue within their own community and then bringing that proposal to life within Minecraft. The competition aims to foster essential skills such as civic engagement, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication, and teamwork among participants.
Minecraft Education is described as a platform designed for classroom use, offering immersive worlds, lessons, and build challenges across subjects including computer science, math, and science. According to Minecraft Education, the platform is currently utilized by more than 40,000 school systems across 140 countries to support various educational objectives. Similar Minecraft-based civic challenges have been successfully implemented worldwide, including New York City’s Battle of the Boroughs, which has involved over 15,000 public school students in developing ideas for sustainability and urban development.
John Fox, an OCDE program specialist in mathematics, expressed the initiative's goal, stating the hope that "students recognize that their ideas and perspectives matter" and that they can play an active role in building a stronger future for their communities.
For educators and school leaders interested in learning more about Battle of the Counties, OCDE will host a free virtual kickoff session. This informational meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 5, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., and requires registration. The session is intended for teachers of grades three through 12, esports teams and teachers, teachers on special assignment, administrators, and district leaders. Attendees will receive information on competition registration and guidelines, project timelines, available educator resources, and the support OCDE will provide.
