Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has faced a summer of challenges following her strong performance in the city’s June 2 mayoral primary. According to www.latimes.com, a string of negative news has emerged for her administration and campaign.
Staff members have departed from both her campaign and administration teams. A major blaze at the Lineage cold-storage food warehouse in Boyle Heights also ignited while Mayor Bass was away from the city. The fire released noxious fumes and a black smoke plume, affecting heavily Latino neighborhoods. This incident drew comparisons to her absence during the 2025 Palisades fire. At a community meeting in early July, Mayor Bass was met with boos from a largely Latino crowd, leading a Pomona College professor to state the fire “deeply eroded” crucial Latino support in the Eastside.
Mayor Bass ordered city agencies to delay rebuilding permits for the Lineage warehouse until strict environmental review. Controversy arose after former top advisor Yusef Robb took on a crisis communications role for Lineage. Robb and the mayor’s office insisted on a “firewall,” and Robb later stated he would no longer advise the mayor. Bass also faced criticism for comments suggesting the air around the warehouse was not dangerous, despite residents reporting sickness. Her spokesperson clarified Bass was citing public health officials and that conditions did not warrant a mandatory evacuation, highlighting the mayor’s efforts in providing mobile health clinics and emergency housing.
Further compounding challenges, a new report showed homelessness in Los Angeles rose by 7.9% in 2026, marking the first increase in three years, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. This contrasts with Mayor Bass’s previous focus on two years of decreases. She attributed the increase partly to state and federal cuts and rising costs, while noting an overall 11% decline since she took office. In contrast, Councilmember Nithya Raman’s district saw a 49% decrease in homelessness.
Political analysts suggest Mayor Bass will need to reset her campaign narrative, including shoring up Eastside Latino support, with three months remaining in the campaign. The mayor’s team, however, has highlighted other successes, such as the World Cup soccer matches at SoFi Stadium and her role in L.A. Metro initiatives, including a proposal for free buses and trains.
