Students at Pacific Drive Elementary School in Fullerton are now starting their school days with a complimentary breakfast, as the Fullerton School District has expanded its 'Breakfast in the Classroom' program. This initiative provides more than 600 students with the opportunity to enjoy a free, nutritious morning meal served directly within their classrooms. The program officially launched at Pacific Drive Elementary on August 17.

This recent expansion builds upon the program's initial successful introduction at Commonwealth Elementary during the 2023-24 school year, and its subsequent expansion to Richman Elementary in the year that followed. With this latest addition, the program now operates across three campuses within the district, bringing convenient and healthy starts to the day for many young learners from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Each morning, students at these participating schools are served a breakfast designed for both nutrition and appeal. The daily meal typically consists of a main entrée, with examples provided including chocolate banana oat muffins and bacon, egg and cheese breakfast pockets. Complementing the entrée, fresh fruit is always included, and milk is readily available for all students.

An important operational aspect of the program is its seamless integration into the school schedule. While students are eating their breakfast, teachers are able to efficiently manage morning duties, such as taking attendance, reviewing previous assignments, or sharing important morning announcements. This design eliminates the need to carve out additional time from instructional periods, effectively making nutritious meals a routine part of the school day. The goal is to help students begin their schooldays feeling focused, engaged, and thoroughly prepared for the learning activities ahead.

The funding necessary to support this program across its three campuses has been secured through a significant grant. More than $52,000 has been awarded to the district for this purpose by the No Kid Hungry nonprofit organization, highlighting external support for student well-being.

According to Victor Trejo, the Fullerton School District's Director of Nutrition Services, the "Breakfast in the Classroom allows us to meet students where they are." He further elaborated that this approach aims to make a nutritious morning meal an easy and natural part of students' daily routine. By delivering breakfast directly to the classrooms, the district seeks to establish a positive morning routine, enabling students to settle in comfortably and concentrate on their learning from the outset of the day.

More broadly, the Fullerton School District plays a substantial role in student nutrition throughout the year. During the 2025-26 school year alone, the district reported serving approximately 1.9 million meals, encompassing breakfasts, lunches, suppers, and snacks. This commitment extends beyond the academic calendar, with over 50,000 additional meals provided during the summer months. It is also noted that free meals remain available to all Fullerton students for the entirety of the school year, underscoring the district's dedication to ensuring student access to healthy food.
